Perhaps it's just a sign of the times when all industries are cutting back. But more than ever, this is the time when we need to go to the theatre and dissapear for a couple of hours into the fantasy world of a musical like the Sound of Music with bigger than life sets, orchestras and lively casts. Oh but alas, this was not the case. I had told my companion about how wonderful the Fox Theatre was (this was her first time) and that all of the performances I had seen there were first rate. I must say the Fox never ceases to amaze. It is a show in itself and never disappoints. However, I have another opinion about the show. First off, what happend to the orchestra? I used to play Trombone in a pit orchestra back in the day when we had live music. Now musicians play with recorded instruments. AAhhhgg, I can hear that at home. Like I said, "perhaps a sign of the times". Also, curtains for sets? Baa Humbug! How about some carpenters with cordless drills or at least hammer and nails. There was really only one set in the show. How disappointing. The actress that played Maria was good with an adequate voice. (It must be hard to be compared to Julie Andrews). The children did a good job but moved like robots and didn't output enough personality. They seemed to be a second thought instead of the center of the story. We sat in the Loge. The actor playing Captain Von Trapp never looked up. He played to the first two rows in the orchestra. Therefore I never saw his face or understood a word he said. His vocals left a lot to be desired as well. I would have picked a tenor and not a baritone. If I were the director, I would have been in the balcony insisting that my actors projected to the last row. I will look for Broadway productions from now on. The Phantom of the Opera was outstanding. The last Theatre of the Stars production I saw was White Christmas last year. I would also rate it the same as Sound of Music.
